Dan’s Biz Bookshelf: ‘Who Gets It? How to Find, Motivate, and Retain Top Talent’
This book is all about finding talent, the people who “get it.” They are the ones who figure it out, who always find a way. They are not afraid to break policy, especially when the policy is stupid (as most of them are). These are the people who will never let you down because they are so mission driven that achieving their goals and fulfilling that mission is more important to them than it is to anyone else.
The authors, brothers Dan and Eric Hoffend, are in the trade show business. They go from city to city, country to country, continent to continent, setting up huge trade shows. This means that they normally show up at huge convention centers; as one show is being dismantled, they have less than 48 hours to set up the next one, and almost always, they are using crews of men and women they have never met before. They must survey a crowd of 100 people and decide who will become their working crew for the week. Talk about pressure! And who better to take advice from when looking for the right people, the people who get it?
This book will teach you how to categorize the different types of people you have in your organization, from the “coasters” who just put in the minimum hours and get paid, to the “comfort zoners” who are perfectly comfortable with their position in the organization, and finally those who “get it.”
As a quick glimpse into the characterization of the people who get it, they know what it takes to do the job. If they don’t know, then they have the initiative to learn. They are passionate about doing a good job. They are not only customer-focused, but they are empathetic to the point of caring for the people they serve. They honestly feel a sense of mission to take care of their customers. These are people who will go the extra mile to make sure their customers get what they need. They “wow” others in customer care.
Finally, there is a very good chapter on training the people who get it; it is so concise that it could be a very effective training program in itself.
I cannot tell you why this book only costs $.99 but please do not let the price fool you. This is one of the best books I have read ever on how to find and manage the very best people your company will ever have.
