Congratulations on achieving this milestone, Dan.
Column 500 contains enough fodder for many months of discussion, investigation and recommendations.
I well remember the Dimitri and his “vision” for Maine Electronics, the upstate NY fishing excursions with General Circuits, and many of the others. We conquered new worlds, overcame many obstacles, and learned to work together. Some of these companies were done in by the major OEMs such as Burroughs and Motorola. Others succumbed to the shift to Asia when OEMs and EMS companies squeezed margins in their search for the cheapest boards.
I have asked and will continue to ask some of the same questions you pose. More than 80% of America’s fabricators have no champion today. They, and we, must recognize the inevitability of change and must participate in it and help shape it rather than become its victims.
So, young man, my advice to you after having started my 60th year in the industry, is to continue to learn from our experiences and to further focus on helping the orphans of our industry.
The challenges are great. The opportunities greater!

Philip Stoten
This last weekend, industry guru and dear friend to many, Martin Cotton passed away. He was one of the first people I worked with in the electronics industry when I joined Toptec Design to learn to layout PCBs. He was a bit of a rock star to many PCB designers, myself included. He was known to be among the best in his field, if not the best, and went on to be one of the most influential and innovative people in the industry over a long and distinguished career. He will be hugely missed by his family and by his numerous friends in and out of the electronics industry.

Twenty-plus years is a long time to lead a business during a long decline in the industry, but IMI President and CEO Peter Bigelow remains quite confident about the future. The company is in a strong financial position, running well, and looking at new technologies. So, what’s his biggest challenge? It’s almost as if upheaval is the new normal. We often describe slow-moving but unstoppable change as moving in “geologic time.” But occasionally–like an earthquake–geology shifts suddenly.
